  • Wooden letter Workshop class with The Salvage Sister! Come to Brighton for the day and enjoy a power tool workshop where you'll make your own solid wooden letter, number or symbol and learn to add mitred wooden edging. The Salvage Sister first made her wooden letters for a campaign with B&Q and taught a masterclass to specifically chosen influencers, now she is offering the class to you! You will learn how to make your very own typography wooden letter from pallet wood and remnant sheet material. You'll go home with the letter you make and the skills to repeat it over and over again! This workshop makes a fantastic gift, have you thought about gifting this class? You can choose which letter you would like to make, they are listed below with a difficulty rating 1 is easy, 5 is hard - some letters are more complex & take longer to create than others, especially to add the edging. If you are a total newbie to woodworking and power tools we advise starting on an easier letter, or if you want to try a hard one and decide not to add the edging later you are welcome to paint the letter during class and leave the edging off. You will be walked through each step of the build and shown how to use all the tools involved to create your wooden masterpiece! The Salvage Sister loves free pallet wood, you can you save yourself loads of cash and do your bit for the planet at the same time when you use unwanted materials like pallets. During this intense 6 hour workshop you will learn the skills needed to create your very own pallet furniture, including how to use all the tools involved, where to look for pallets, and how to take them apart. Once you’ve learnt these skills you will be able to repeat this process at home to make as many pieces of furniture as you like in the future - saving lots of cash and stress.   • Make your own wooden silhouette artwork workshop

    Come to Brighton and make a beautiful, wooden silhouette artwork from reclaimed wood & customise it to your own style. During this 5 hour workshop you will have the freedom to design your own simple silhouette artwork & learn the skills needed to create it from reclaimed wood. You can either find a vector design online and I will show you how to replicate it onto wood, or you can bring a printed photo, or even freestyle your design & draw it by hand it's up to you. You will choose the colour scheme for the background of your artwork too, that way you can tailor it to fit with your decor & style. Your design can be absolutely anything you can think of, from your pet dog to a boat, maybe you would like to create a design from nature such a tree, mountains or a snowflake? You could even chose a font and a word to make into a wooden artwork - it really is totally up to you. You can come away from this class with something totally unique that you have made yourself & the skills to replicate the build at home as many times as you like. You will learn to use a variety of different powertools while you create your masterpiece - from sliding mitre chop saws to jigsaws, pin guns and scroll saws! (See tools list below.) We finish off this build by framing the artwork ready to hang on your wall or place on a shelf at home - to frame we will learn to cut mitres and join them which is another useful skill that will come in handy for a variety of other tasks later in crafting! There is a great opportunity to be artistic & customise your artwork to your own tastes by choosing the colour paint/s you use and choosing the design you will cut out, you are encouraged to be original and come up with your own ideas to suit your style and decor. We use reclaimed wood for the build which we will choose from the offcuts at the Woodstore. Various paint colours, wood stains and waxes will be provided depending on the look you want to go for. We use a scroll saw &  jigsaw to cut out the shapes & a chop saw or circular saw to make straight and mitred wood cuts. You will use wood glue, a pin gun and nails to put the entire piece together & frame it. All tools, materials, safety wear and equipment are provided. You will learn about cutting & drilling steel, how to cut wood with a circular saw & chop saw, fix planks of wood together with a biscuit cutter and what fixings are best to use for a project like this.  At the end you’ll take what you’ve made home & use the box as you wish, they are great for storage or can be fixed to the wall as a quirky box shelf, mine has been claimed by my dog for her bed!   • Make a pallet planter – full day workshop class

    Learn the skills needed to deconstruct pallets before making your own garden planter & taking it home on the day! The Salvage Sister taught Kirsty Allsopp how to make this trough on stage in front of 200 people at The Handmade Fair - if she can do it, so can you! During this intense 6 hour workshop you will learn the skills needed to create your very own colourful garden trough, including where to look for pallets, which ones work best, and how to easily take apart pallets and cut down ready to build with, and what fixings and tools to use to your advantage. The Salvage Sister will guide you through the build, teaching you how to use all the power tools needed and what lasting fixings to use in the garden environment. You have the choice of which shape planter you would like to construct - V-shaped, square, rectangular or asymetric, its up to you!  You will have the option to make it into a strawberry trough and leave some gaps in the sides for the strawberries to hang through, or fill the sides with pallet planks. Once you’ve learnt these skills you will be able to repeat this process at home to make as many troughs as you like in the future - saving lots of cash and stress. if you make a full size V-shaped planter like the one in the main image the approximate dimensions of it will be; length - 1000mm to 1200mm width - 600mm height - 700mm soil depth - 500mm However, If you are travelling far, have a small car, garden, or for some reason would prefer to make a smaller or different shape trough this is up to you!   • Come to Brighton for a Workshop with a difference - this workshop is freestyle. Meaning you can bring you own item, or idea to work on during this 6 hour workshop. Because this class is freestyle it has a maximum number of 4 students at a time. You can bring an item to upcycle, or use wood from The WoodStore which you can pick out at the time with the advice of the Salvage Sister. (Depending on your build you may have to purchase some materials in store, or bring them with you to the workshop - this can be discussed via email prior to the class) When you book the class simply email me your idea and I will advise you in the lead up to the class of what you might need to bring & the tools & equipment I can bring for use during the class. Please note that because The WoodStore's workshop is full of wood it is not compatible with processes that require fire or very hot temperatures like welding or forging - this class is mainly for upcycling and woodwork projects. You'll watch them in action, learn what the various components do, what fixings to use, how much you can expect to pay for them and how to safely use power tools before trying them all out. When you feel confident you can practice cutting, drilling and sanding wood with electric saws, drills and deconstructing pallets. The Salvage Sister is a pro and will teach you everything you need to know about power tools so you can start growing your collection of useful items and become a savvy DIYer in your own home.
