My handcrafted Viking Shield coffee table is made from real salvaged cable reel & the base was designed by me & created from industrial shelving uprights & motorcycle parts for the feet & chain around the table top.

Inspiration

I wanted to make a coffee table from the old wooden reels I had salvaged.  I had the idea to make the legs tripod like before I even started, and the shelving uprights looked fab on a nice angle. The table started to look like a UFO, or a Viking shield!

I love the warm rustic wood, paired with the cold hard angles of the steel. And aren’t those little cog feet adorable?!

Cable reels are often chucked out at industrial sites, some are just ply, but this beauty was nicely weathered & had good solid timber.

Colour

The base is sand blasted to remove old paint & rust, but just leave a slight colouration & lines, or textures from it’s history – which add to the industrial theme. The base is lacquered to prevent rust from moisture. The wooden top is sealed down the cracks, refurbished to remove any sharp nails or edges, before sanding smooth & applying stain & a water resistant coating.
