Why did you choose Salvage Sister to learn hands-on skills?
I wanted to find a female-led workshop, which not only eliminated the possible risk of ‘chest-beating-wood-head’ mentality, which would have meant being treated as ‘just a girl’. (As I had experienced with previous creative engagements.) I also wanted a woodwork course which enabled a creative focus to work around pre-existing glass sculptures which I had made. Salvage Sister’s Creative course was EXACTLY what I was looking for…
Did you have hands-on Skills before Salvage Sister?
I had only ever worked with wooden additions before Salvage Sister, and had never used any of the power tools we used during the workshop before. Nor did I know a single thing about joint types, adhesive, or anything about woodwork processes at all.

I joined the ‘Creative Design & Make Course’.
What you’ve gained from Salvage Sister workshops?
Through the workshop, an organic creative solution for the glass evolved. The plan was to make three individual pieces. All three came into fruition.
I have gained practical skills and knowledge with power tools. Also; the importance of planning, drawing and establishing the correct angles when cutting individual pieces to join. Not forgetting the hell that is the biscuit joint!
What you do now creatively, & how has life changed since Salvage Sister workshops?
I am a mixed media sculptor, I recently moved my practice into glasswork. I wanted my glass sculptures to work alongside other materials, both as an extension to the work, as well as an encasement / plinth for the glass.
The workshop has enabled me to do this. Now, with the wooden creations, it has completed the pieces of glass into fully formed & finished pieces of sculpture art. All three pieces have been on show in multiple exhibitions.
Salvage Sister has now also given me the confidence and motivation to explore this material even further.
