Why did you choose Salvage Sister to learn hands-on skills?
I chose Salvage Sister for my course because a friend wanted to do it and wanted company. I had seen Charis on Facebook and she looked fun and all the photos/posts looked like the students had made cool, functional things.
I also liked the fact that pallet wood/waste wood was used as i try to use recycled/repurposed materials in my art. I was really excited to try power tools!
Did you have hands-on Skills before Salvage Sister?
I had virtually no experience before other than an electric screw driver and a hammer!
Workshops joined?
I chose the ‘Creative Design Make Course’ to create a community book swap unit for outside my house, as I live next door to a busy community centre. I made one and it is used every day by the local community.
What you’ve gained from Salvage Sister workshops?
I not only gained experience of using power tools, (love them!) but the easy and fun manner Charis brings, along with her encouragement gave me the confidence that I CAN do whatever I put my mind to.
I had had to give up my job as a carer due to a long term health condition just before starting the course. I was feeling very down and unsure of what my future would be. The confidence and pure enthusiasm of Charis and the skills that I gained encouraged me to apply to do a 3 year Designer Maker degree course. Metal work, wood work, ceramics, stained glass, fabrics and printing. I have just finished my first year (with an A- ) and i’m loving it! So I can honestly say doing the course has completely changed my life and confidence.
What you do now creatively, & how has life changed since Salvage Sister workshops?
I’m now doing metal work, hand raising copper bowls for my course, building a potting area from pallets at my allotment and I am still making art from driftwood and ex-fishing rope which I then incorporate in my ceramic and metal work. And I now own a nice collection of power tools!
