Why did you choose Salvage Sister to learn hands-on skills?
I’ve always loved wood and have always wanted to learn how to make things. It may be in my blood as I come from a family of carpenters. My grandfather was a clock maker and uncles ran a carpentry business. I looked online for woodwork classes near me and found Salvage Sister. I read a lot of the reviews and looked at the range of courses available. I loved Charis’s style and that a lot of the courses had a lot of women learning the skills. I bought my best friend a voucher for a pallet workshop and we both attended in July 2024. I loved it and wanted to learn and make more.
Did you have hands-on Skills before Salvage Sister?
I had no woodworking skills before I joined the course. Only basic skills in using a drill and screwdriver!!! I wanted to know how to use the tools but the impatient me wanted to make something whilst I did.
Workshops joined?
I started with the one day pallet workshop…. was hooked so joined the 8 week creative course (now on the second run of those). Not sure what I am going to do when this course finishes. They are a brilliant way to learn the skills but they are so much more… they have become the highlight of my week.
We have a laugh with everyone and I look forward to seeing what everyone is making. Charis and her team make the evenings so enjoyable. Whilst I have focused on wood as it interests me the course can help you with so many other mediums. The only blocker is your imagination.
What you’ve gained from Salvage Sister workshops?
The courses have really cemented my love for making things. After the pallet course I bought a chop saw closely followed by a number of other tools and I now have a workshop set up in my garage (including pieces of wood all sorted by size).
I am no longer afraid to use the big noisy tools and I have demoted hubby and now am the one who drills and screws things together.
I enjoy working things out and putting the skills I have learnt into practice (except maybe dowel joins which are my nemesis!)
What you do now creatively, & how has life changed since Salvage Sister workshops?
I have always have a love of crafting and making things but I am now looking at what I can make with wood.
I am known as the pallet lady in our village and ask neighbours if I can take them off their hands if I spot one on a driveway.
I even visited my first ever timber merchant today and was like a kid in a sweet shop. I have made 2 cabinets and a potting bench in the last 10 months, something I wouldn’t have thought possible before doing the courses.
I am currently working on a bookcase for my daughter’s flat and a shelf unit to store my tools…who would have thought it!
